Rock on Top of Another Rock (2013/2022) is a simple yet astonishing sculpture by the Swiss artist collaborators Peter Fischli and David Weiss. First shown in Hyde Park in London, this version of the multi-site sculpture (the others are in Norway and Switzerland) suggests a giant wayfinder, a rock literally on top of another to mark a spot during a walk or climb. Commenting on the Norway sculpture, Peter Fischli said:

To put one rock on top of another rock in the wilderness is the first thing you do if you want to make a mark. When you walk and you want to find your way back, you make this mark. It is a very archaic, simple thing. We wanted to make something that forces you to stop your car and get out to take a photograph.

Peter Fischli

Seemingly simple, the work engages complex engineering to achieve the sense of precarious balance. Fischli-Weiss’s often humorous works, illuminate a shared humanity in finding the simplest of gestures revealing our collective sense of astonishment.
