Named after Sheikh Fahad bin Ali, son of Qatar’s fourth ruler, Sheikh Ali bin Abdullah Al Thani, the palace reflects the evolution of Qatari architecture throughout the second half of the 20th century. First built in 1952, the complex underwent several phases of expansion and renovation, most recently in 2021, resulting in a blend of architectural styles and construction techniques.
Fahad Bin Ali Palace
Built in 1952 near the Amiri Diwan, Sheikh Fahad bin Ali Palace reflects the evolution of Qatari architecture, with recent conservation work revealing elements of its original character.

The residential buildings, dating to around 1960, are among the earliest examples in Qatar to incorporate modern construction techniques, including reinforced concrete. They also feature colourful decorative elements characteristic of Doha Deco, a distinctive architectural style that emerged during this period.

Over time, successive renovations concealed much of the palace’s original decoration beneath layers of white paint. To uncover its historic colour schemes, Qatar Museums invited a team of Italian paint specialists to investigate the original finishes. By carefully removing successive layers of paint, the team revealed traces of the original colours, which are visible today. These findings will inform future restoration efforts aimed at recovering the palace’s historic appearance.

Other parts of the complex have also undergone significant changes. The long building surrounding the graveyard, originally dating to the 1950s, was entirely reconstructed during recent restoration works. The East Gate, through which visitors now enter the palace, was renovated in the early 2000s, when two modern warehouses were also added to the complex.
In 2026, Qatar Museums reopened Sheikh Fahad bin Ali Palace to the public marking a new chapter in the history of this remarkable heritage site.

From 25 October 2026 to 29 May 2027, the palace welcomes visitors to explore a programme of exhibitions within its historic setting.

Monday: Closed
Note: Visitors may only enter during opening hours with a valid exhibition ticket. The offices remain inaccessible to the public.
