Behind every door lies a story — of the people who made it, the lives it sheltered and the society it helped shape. This exhibition brings together 52 historic wooden doors, door frames and windows rediscovered in the National Museum of Qatar's storage, placing them at the centre of a living effort to understand Qatar's architectural heritage.
Through conservation, research and community knowledge, the project retraces the doors' origins, neighborhoods and social lives, inviting visitors to contribute memories, photographs and documentation that help reconnect them to the homes and communities to which they once belonged. An artistic installation in the palace courtyard reimagines the lives behind these thresholds, alongside exhibition galleries conceived as open storage and active workshops where research and conservation unfold in real time.
Curated by Bouthayna Baltaji, Director of Qatar Museums’ Museography and Heritage Museums Development Department, and Ajmal Maiwandi, Director of Aga Khan Cultural Services for Afghanistan and Qatar, this exhibition brings together institutional expertise and community knowledge to reframe these architectural elements as cultural anchors rather than isolated artefacts.
