Sea Turtles Through Space and Time

The people of Qatar have always lived in close relationship with the sea. It has provided food, pearls, and routes of connection across the Gulf and the world, while shaping traditions, memories, and ways of life. This relationship is also rooted in a much older marine past: Qatar’s fossil record shows that sea turtles have been part of the region’s marine story since the Miocene era, carrying their presence beyond recent history and into deep time.

Today, sea turtles continue to form part of Qatar’s coastal story, connecting its shores to the wider marine world and to the remarkable journeys these animals make across the Gulf and beyond.

Across cultures and generations, these enduring animals have inspired beliefs, art, and traditions, appearing as guardians, creators, guides, and teachers. Tales from Qatar, Hawaiʻi, Oman, South Asia, China, Mesopotamia, and the Haudenosaunee, reveal the many ways turtles have been imagined, honoured, and understood as symbols of wisdom, patience, resilience, protection, and the enduring power of life.

In Qatar, for example, the hawksbill turtle holds particular importance as the main sea turtle species known to nest on the country’s beaches, while other species use Qatari waters for feeding, migration, or occasional visits. Yet the sea turtles that have inspired generations of stories now face an increasingly challenging world.

Habitat degradation, fisheries interactions, pollution, marine debris, and other human pressures affect their survival across much of their range, reminding us of the importance of protecting nesting beaches, coastal waters, and the fragile marine habitats that support life.

This sense of responsibility also aligns with Qatar National Vision 2030 and its commitment to safeguarding the country’s natural environment and heritage.

As quoted in Qatar National Vision 2030, Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser reminds us:

These words offer a meaningful reminder that our relationship with the natural world is not only about what we inherit, but also about what we choose to protect and pass on to future generations. In this sense, the stories of sea turtles are more than reflections of the past; they can also inspire us to care for the living creatures and marine environments that remain part of our world today.
