Across the world, cultural heritage sites are recognised for their historical, cultural and scientific value through organisations such as UNESCO, ALESCO and ICESCO.
- UNESCO (the Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) focuses on identifying and protecting sites of outstanding universal value to humanity.
- ALECSO (the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organisation) registers significant cultural sites to promote preservation across the Arab world
- ICESCO (the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) highlights heritage that reflects the history and culture of the Islamic world.
Being added to one or more of these lists signals official recognition that an archaeological or heritage site is important not only to a single country, but also to the wider global or Islamic community. This recognition helps ensure preservation, raises international awareness and encourages efforts to protect these sites for future generations.
Currently, two of Qatar’s sites are recognised by UNESCO, four by ALECSO and ten by ICESCO, reflecting their significance both nationally and internationally.
