Workshop | Place as Narrative: Film, Video, and New Media Art with Leena Kim

Event

Fire Station: Artist in Residence

How can a place shape the way a story or experience is understood? This discussion-based workshop explores how landscapes, architecture, natural environments, and everyday spaces can become active elements in film, video, and new media art—not simply backgrounds.

Drawing on East Asian cinema and international video and new media art, we’ll explore how artists use place, weather, atmosphere, architecture, and seasonal change to express emotion, memory, character, and time. We’ll consider how environments can work alongside characters and events, or carry meaning on their own, shaping how we understand a scene and its emotional or narrative significance.

The workshop will also consider how photography, film, projection, installation, immersive environments, and digital imagery can transform our experience of place and offer new ways of seeing.

No previous knowledge of cinema, video art, or new media art is required.

Leena Kim is a visual artist working across video, photography, text, and installation. Her work explores the distance between places as they are experienced and as they are remembered, imagined, or encountered through images, examining how memory, longing, and emotional projection transform environments into psychological as well as physical spaces. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in Visual Arts from Columbia University and is currently a participant in the Arts Intensive Study Programme at the Fire Station. Her work has been exhibited and screened internationally across the United States, Europe, and Asia.
