Qatari artist Ali Hassan Al Jaber started his artistic career as a calligrapher over twenty-five years ago. Al Jaber’s practice is constructed of abstract calligraphic and figural forms and is considered an expression of his spirituality. Al Jaber has dedicated his work to ‘the people of Qatar, those who had lived here or travelled through, individuals, families, Arabs and non-Arabs, those who had left their traces’. Desert Horse captures the spirit of travel and the flow of movement, just as the Bedouins used horses for travel in the past. Hassan’s artistic technique approaches calligraphy by combining classical techniques with abstraction and a contemporary interpretation that is translated into sculpture.
