Azzam spoke to QM about the process behind said workshops, which introduce aspiring creatives to the craft, while encouraging local artistic potential.
Q. How would you describe your practice to someone who is discovering your work for the first time?
Ismail Azzam: I see myself as a painter working in a contemporary realist style that leans toward Impressionism, with a particular focus on portraiture.
Q. What does a typical creative process look like for you, from the first thought to the finished piece?
Azzam: My creative process begins when I enter a state of spiritual and physical solitude with the artwork. At first, there is a stage of conscious mental planning, because realist painting involves certain calculations and structural rules. After that—and this is the most important part—the true creative journey begins once the preparatory stage is complete.
