A Sneak Peek at Qatar Auto Museum Project, a special exhibition at the National Museum of Qatar (on view through 20 January 2023), introduces the concept design for a new museum that will bring Qatar’s expanding car community under one roof. A second, complementary exhibition, Discover Qatar with Qatar Auto Museum presents a remarkable collection of racing cars on loan from the collections of QAM’s advisory board, displayed within repurposed shipping containers at Qatar’s heritage sites, including Barzan Towers and Al Zubarrah. As well as among other locations, such as Liwan Design Studios and Labs and the advisory board member’s private museums. These are, Letbelah Museum, Faisal Bin Qassim Museum and Salem Al Mohannadi’s Museum.

The new, 30,000-square-metre (320,000-square-foot) museum is designed by the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), led by Pritzker Architecture Prize winning architect Rem Koolhaas, and will be housed in the old Doha Exhibition Centre (DEC) which is located on the Lusail Expressway between Katara Hills Park, 5/6 Park, and Al-Qassar Metro station. It will include permanent galleries that track the evolution of the automobile from its invention through today and how it has influenced culture in Qatar. Temporary exhibition spaces will display high-profile vehicles — from supercars and limited editions to racecars and classic cars. Additional facilities will include an “Edutainment” Center and Workshop Spaces, as well as areas dedicated to children’s activities such as driving simulators, mini car mechanics, kids driving areas, and more.
