Experiments with Phone Photography

You don’t have to film the way it tells you to.

Smartphone cameras are indeed very ‘smart’, adjusting several parameters in the background and efficiently freeing up the user to focus on the scene. These devices are designed to make things look ‘nice’ and ‘balanced’ without much effort, however, what if one wants to try something different?

Join us for an experimental workshop teaching participants to use mobile phone camera in ‘incorrect’ and unorthodox ways to achieve unique results, going further than a smartphone’s usual capabilities.

Participants will use their smartphone camera’s in-built filters, external camera software, and video editing tools to document their personal world through their own unique perspective. This workshop will provide instructions on creating color imbalances, adjusting ‘lost’ video data, using digital artifacts as style elements; and eventually allow participants to curate a short film in their own way.

This 3-day workshop will take place in a span of one week, held at Liwan Design Studios and Labs, in the Photography Lab.

Liwan’s photography lab is a newly inaugurated resource for experimental photography and visual-practices to support Qatar-based creatives.
