Ferozkoh represents a partnership between the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) in Doha and the Turquoise Mountain Institute for Afghan Arts and Architecture in Kabul. Sixteen students and teachers from Turquoise Mountain arrived in Doha to study historical objects stored in the MIA’s archives. Half of the objects featured in the Ferozkoh exhibition were ancient artefacts from the MIA collection with connections to the great dynasties of Afghanistan; the other half were works created specifically for the exhibition by Turquoise Mountain students in response to, and in conversation with, the historical objects. This publication captures the dialogue between the past and present and highlights how the museum’s role is not only to preserve historical artefacts but also to nurture new generations of artists and artisans.
