Book cover of Louise Bourgeois: Conscious and Unconscious by Philip Larrat-Smith

Conscious and Unconscious offers a representative survey of Louise Bourgeois’s highly autobiographical body of work, which addresses themes of motherhood, identity, memory and the cycles of life. Her work is characterised by raw emotional content, hovering between figuration and abstraction, the geometric and the organic, the bodily and the architectural. Conscious and Unconscious features 30 works created between 1947–2009, including her monumental sculpture of a spider entitled Maman, which is installed at Qatar’s National Convention Centre. The book also contains essays by Philip Larratt-Smith and Sophia Al-Maria and an illustrated chronology of the artist’s life and work.
