Dia al-Azzawi is a renowned Iraqi artist. He now lives and works in London. Regarded as a pioneer of modern Arab art, his work blends art with Arabic calligraphy.

He studied archaeology at the University of Baghdad and fine arts under the renowned painter Hafidh al-Droubi. He began his career in the Iraqi art scene, joining groups such as the Baghdad Modern Art Group and later founding the New Vision Group in 1968, which promoted creativity rooted in Arabic tradition.

Regional conflict is a recurring theme in his work, and his pieces often inspire him to give voice to those silenced by war. Al-Azzawi donated this piece in 2017 and it is emblematic of this drive.
