Born in East Germany, Joachim Krug escaped in 1972 and later moved to Doha in 1982. At that time, athletics in Qatar lacked resources and training infrastructure. A former indoor shot-put champion, Krug helped build the national athletics programme from the ground up. He led Qatar to its first Gulf Championship win in 1986 and guided Mohamed Suleiman to win the country’s first Olympic medal in 1992.
