Museum of Islamic Art Internship 1

Period of internship: 6 months

About This Internship:

The intern will gain valuable experience in managing, preserving, and researching rare books related to Islamic gastronomy, food history, and culinary traditions. Assist with a collection of over 8000 rare books in Latin, Italian and French related to Gastronomy.

Qualification Required: Master’s Degree, Diploma Degree

Skills Required:

  • Advanced research skills
  • Proficiency in English (both written and spoken), familiarity with Arabic, and knowledge of Italian

The intern will:

Conduct Collection Research & Cataloging:

  • Assist in cataloguing and updating metadata for rare books and manuscripts on Islamic gastronomy. Conduct research on historical recipes, culinary traditions, and their connections to Islamic culture and heritage. Work with bibliographic records, helping to enhance the accessibility of the collection.

Support Exhibition Projects & Public Engagement: 

  • Assist in curating a display or exhibition featuring rare gastronomy texts.
  • Develop interpretative materials.
  • Support events and workshops that explore historical Islamic cuisine through manuscripts.
  • Display labels, digital guides, or social media content.
  • Observe curators as they carry out their daily tasks related to managing the MIA collection.
  • Learn how to assist curators in the development of exhibition projects.
  • They will support the research work of the team thanks to their academic background and language skills.
  • They will also be involved in the preliminary work for some of the forthcoming exhibitions at MIA, in particular the following projects: Indian Ocean Exhibition, Uzbekistan and the Silk Road, Italy and the Islamic world.

Engage in Library Outreach & Programming:

  • Assist in organizing educational programs for students and researchers.
  • Support special events such as guest lectures, cooking demonstrations, or book talks related to Islamic gastronomy.
  • Engage with the public by creating content for library newsletters or blog posts.

Period of internship: 3 months

About This Internship:

The intern will gain valuable experience by being introduced to the daily work of the MIA Curatorial team, learning about the general working structure of MIA, its exhibition-making process, and public activities, as well as understanding how to support the daily administrative and research tasks of the Curatorial team.

Specialist area: History and Chinese Studies

Qualification Required: Bachelor's Degree

Skills Required:

  • Attention to detail
  • Advanced research skills
  • Written and spoken English competence, Arabic language knowledge, knowledge of Italian.

The intern will:

  • Gain insight into the operational practices of the MIA Curatorial Department.
  • Observe curators as they carry out their daily tasks related to managing the MIA collection.
  • Learn how to assist curators in the development of exhibition projects.
  • They will support the research work of the team thanks to their academic background and language skills.
