Period of Internship: 6 months
About This Internship
- Become familiar with the principles of collections care and preventive conservation, including safe object handling practices.
- Understand the importance of documentation in preserving object histories, contexts, and compliance with institutional policies.
- Gain insight into museum policies, procedures, and international standards in collections management.
- Learn the processes of acquisitions and loans, including principles of ethical collecting and acquisition decision-making.
- Observe and support the development of exhibitions and displays, gaining exposure to planning, preparation, and installation phases.
Specialist area: Ideal candidates will have a background in the humanities (e.g., history, cultural studies, art, archaeology, ethnography) or in IT fields such as computer science or database management
Qualification Required: Bachelor’s Degree or University student
Skills Required
- Attention to detail and accuracy in completing tasks
- Good organisational and planning skills
- Proficiency in English (written and spoken)
- Experience working with databases (desirable but not essential)
- An active interest in museums and cultural heritage
The intern will:
- Receive EMu system training and support basic record navigation;
- Assist with object registration and documentation;
- Support inventory checks and organisation of documentation backlogs;
- Update object locations and movement records in EMu;
- Assist with object handling, packing, and re-housing;
- Support internal object movements and storage transfers;
- Assist with exhibition-related collections documentation (installs/de-installs);
- Upload and organise digital records (images, condition reports);
- Draft basic collections documentation.
